Using religious icons on dresses and t-shirts isn’t a new trend, however on Saturday consumers of Amazon.com noticed that the online portal is selling doormats with images of Hindu Gods, verses from Quran and images of Jesus Christ causing furore amongst on social media.
There was much ridicule on twitter and other platforms and #banamazon was trending on Twitter. Based on this outrage, Amazon has been in the process of removing these products from its site, and the spokes person said in an email – We are sorry for inadvertently hurting consumer sentiments. We have escalated this to the concerned global team, for them to take appropriate action.
During the later part of last year Myntra was attacked for allegedly using cow hide to make leather bags. And a few others have complained that Amazon.in has been using religious iconography on the phone covers etc…While some instances are not so significant like using a Ganesha on phone cover in Hindu religious context, however using religious iconography on doormats is taking things too far. Amazon is in the process of correcting the mistake.
