Simone Biles of USA wins the gold in the final vault’s event even as Indian star of Gymnastics Dipa Karmakar, who raised hopes when she rose to the second position, slipped to the fourth position with Simone’s vault of 15.966 and Russia’s Maria Paseka’s bronze winning score of 15.253. She misses the bronze medal by 0.150 point.
However, the fact that she is the first Indian gymnast after decades, who rose to fame and her Produnova vault (the vault of death), and the way she worked so hard to be in the game and get a medal will remain in history as remarkable. And hopefully Indian youngsters are inspired by her to take up sports, so that in future we will not put so much pressure on just one person, but have several participants in Olympics.
She is in fourth position, a no less achievement and this came about through discipline and hard work. After Dipa qualified for the finals, her coach removed the SIM card from her mobile phone, and she was only allowed to talk to her parents, so that she can focus on finals.
For India, she will remain a medal winner – a medal of love and respect, a reminder of our collective failure to nurture more sportsmen, and hopefully a harbinger of positive change in the Indian sports where the government and stakeholders begin to support sports and sports persons with sincerity and dedication.
Dipa Karmakar – You are our winner, we are proud of you!
