Protest against violence on Dalits that has erupted across Gujarat will take a worrisome turn as far as Gujarat government is concerned. The Dalit Mahasammelan planned to protest Una flogging
A Dalit MLA belonging to BJP party Babu Pandvadra resigned from the party on Saturday. He is a senior leader and has been with the party for 26 years before deciding to resign one evening before the Maha Sammelan that is expected to attract a huge turnout. Infact Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel was worried that the protest may take a violent turn like it dids during the Patidar rally in August last year.
One the sidelines of the event the Una Daliut Atyachar Ladat Samiti asked the Dalits to apply for licenses on weapons for self-defense. They even suggested that the government should be asked to set up training centres for judo, karate and other martial arts in order to defend themselves. It has proposed to ask for employment for unemployment and implementation of sixth pay commission recommendations for sanitation workers and grant of government waste lands to earn livelihoods.
While the proposal to demand for livelihood etc is valid – one wonders how getting licenses on weapons will help the situation. Does this represent loss of faith on law and order keeping mechanism in the state. It definitely looks like it.
