India gets closer to Nuclear Elite club as US President Obama agrees to support India in becoming a member of the 340member Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). Monday was the deadline for any member to object to a new member, and none had. Membership with MTCR also means becoming a member of the Nuclear Supplies Group (NSG). The US support to India is in a way stopping China in its track of dominating Asia – Pacific region on trade, commerce and energy supply.
In fact before bilateral meeting India and the US disclosed that all the hurdles had cleared for MTCR, and New Delhi has the support of almost all the members of NSG except for China which is trying to block India’s entry and is batting for Pakistan.
On the other hand Obama clarified that US is committed to help India build its defence capabilities until it can be the net provider of security in Asia, irrespective of US-India alliance. Meanwhile Japan’s ambassador to India Kenji Hiramatsu reflected his country;s stand when he said, “We hope India will be a prt of NSG”.
