While the women Archers team (Laxmirani Majhi, Bombayla Devi, Deepika Kumari) did manage to get into the Quarter final;s, the day belonged to Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar who qualified for women’s individual vault final in Artistic Gymnastics. She finished on 8th position and just managed to gain an entry.

Dipa was in the sixth position, however, USA’s Simone Biles followed a strong performance by Canadian gymnast pushed her to the eight position – which is in fact the last position to qualify. In fact Sipa’s favourite event in Vault and she attempted the much difficult Produnova vault which is not risked by many others, and managed to get a score of 14.6.
Twitter was full of congratulatory tweets, and a few like Amitabh Bachchan lamented the Indian channels not showing her perform.

He tweeted – #DipaKarmakar .. they said they would show you but never did .. channels interested in the other country athletes ! Good luck

VVS Laxman too was one of the first sports people to tweet – Congratulations #DipaKarmakar for creating history by becoming the 1st Indian women to qualify for the vaults finalsGood luck #Rio2016

Harsha Bhogle reminded that Dipa’s achievement goes down in history for she is the only Indian gymnast since over 50 years now to have qualified for Olympics, leave alone reach finals – Now this is history! #DipaKarmakar in the vault finals. Remember, an Indian woman gymnast hadn’t been to the Olympics before! #Pioneer
