‘Goal of Team India at the Olympics: Rio jao. Selfies lo. Khaali haat wapas aao. What a waste of money and opportunity’ – said popular columnist Shobhaa De on twitter handle commenting on the unsatisfactory performance of Olympic contingent at Rio so far.
Yet another mockery came in the form of a tweet by one Abhinandan Sekhri, who also claims to be a journalist, who said it would have been better if Abhinva used a pellet gun; this after he narrowly missed a bronze medal.
And evidently while there were a few supporters of the tweet; many others came down heavily on high handedness and insensitive comment. Twitter exploded with people from all of walks of life condemning the two for their thoughtless and crude remarks. In a series of angry tweets, C-voter analyst Yashwant Deshmukh went so far as suggesting that people who criticise athletes have oral piles.
There were several facebook posts and social media updates condemning the duo. In the existing tough conditions in Indian sports the players, especially those coming from poor background find it difficult to even buy proper shoes. The facilities arranged by Sports authority of India are never good or in time; and sportspersons face several obstacles and hurdles along the way, only to be able to play for the country at Olympics. And when they finally make it to Olympics, that in itself is a great feat.
Above all it is after all a game. And like wise several stalwarts are falling to talented youngsters as a part of the game and names like Venus Williams and Novak Djokovic fell in the first few rounds itself. To call Indian sports people at Rio a waste of time, because they failed to get a medal is completely in bad taste, and no wonder the twitter is loaded with tweets trolling the catty Shobhaa De.
