Dear well-wishers of Sankara Nethralaya:

I am pleased to join with Mr. S V Acharya, President Emeritus, and Mrs. Leela Krishnamurthy, President of Sankara Nethralaya OM (SN OM) Trust in expressing our heartfelt gratitude for your continued support for our mission to provide free services to indigent population. 2018 is a landmark year, marking the 40th anniversary of Sankara Nethralaya and 30th of SN OM Trust.

Nethralaya specializes in providing quality patient care, education and India-centric research in ophthalmic discipline. During the year just completed, Nethralaya performed 63,258 surgeries, treated 794,695  outpatients, held 1,076  eye camps and dispensed  10,934 eye glasses.  Almost half of all the services were provided free to indigent patients, which was possible only by your generous donations.

One of the unique service by Nethralaya is Mobile Eye Surgical Unit (MESU) – These are two bus units, one serving as screening and preparatory unit and the other as operation theatre, which go out to villages to perform surgeries. Three such units have so far conducted 95 camps and performed 11,986 surgeries on the field.

Here are the highlights of 2018 –

A MESU unit was launched in Jharkhand State with TATA group support

A new hospital, Suraj Sankara Nethralaya was inaugurated in September 2018 in Chetpet in Tamil Nadu with support from Sri. Surajmal Jain and is expected to screen 10,000 patients and perform 350 surgeries in the first year of operation.

The “Bhumi Pooja” for an exclusive community hospital was performed in St. Thomas Mount in Chennai in April 2018, which upon completion will perform 12,000 surgeries on indigent patients.

Our immediate future plans are –

Nethralaya has been invited to manage a hospital in Surat, in Gujrat to be built and equipped by Nirali Medical Memorial Trust, headed by Sri A M Naik

Thirupathi Thirumala Devasthanams has agreed to donate one MESU Unit for providing free services to indigents in Andhra Pradesh

Plans are under way to start Sankara Nethralaya University in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh to provide ophthalmic education and produce more ophthalmic professionals to serve the country

As in the past years, I would appreciate if you can continue your generous support and help us in our mission of eradicating blindness in the Indian sub-continent.
